Update to SLIP services

SLIP public services

The SLIP Services team is pleased to inform you that new SLIP public services are now available. These will replace existing services including SLIP Classic (Enabler) services.

Please change to the new SLIP services that are outlined below, as soon as convenient. You can find out how to do this by reading the DataWA Toolkit article, SLIP migration overview.

Please see the SLIP migration overview information sheet (514KB) about migration to the new SLIP platform.

The new public services are:

Please note that local government authority boundaries, townsites, localities, districts and wards layers have moved from the subscription administrative boundaries service to the new public boundaries service.

The cadastre address and cadastre (no attributes) layers have also moved from the subscription cadastral service to the new public property and planning service.

See the Groups section of data.wa.gov.au for the new public service details which include OGC WMS/ WFS, Esri REST services and data download packages.

Services already released including 2011 ABS Census data, Western Power and Tenure are also available under the groups section of data.wa.gov.au.

If you have any queries regarding these new services, please contact Landgate Business Sales and Service via salesandservice@landgate.wa.gov.au.

SLIP subscription services

New Landgate SLIP subscription services are also now available. As with public services, these will replace existing services including SLIP Classic (Enabler) services.

Customers using SLIP Classic or WMTS services will need to change to using new SLIP data services prior to the end of 2017 to continue accessing data. This is when access to SLIP Classic data services will be turned off.

Please see the SLIP migration overview and information sheet about migration to the new SLIP platform.

More information about the full list of subscription Landgate data services and maps available through SLIP can be found on the Landgate website.

To find out more about service migration, please visit data.wa.gov.au to download the latest information sheet (PDF 514KB) about migration to the new SLIP platform. The document is also available via the DataWA toolkit.

Landgate topographic basemap

Landgate has recently released a new topographic basemap service, which is now available via SLIP.

The basemap is a WA-centric map comprising Landgate location information, including simplified cadastre, topographic and road centreline for the whole of the state. The WA focus means that it is the perfect backdrop to provide context for projects that require location information.

Features of the service include a stylised ‘StreetSmart’ style layout that is georeferenced and updated quarterly.

Although the service is view only - meaning it doesn’t have data download capability - because it is georeferenced, it can still be viewed with Landgate’s other subscription datasets, SLIP public datasets and your own georeferenced data.

Designed for use within GIS and online mapping applications, the tile cached basemap service introduces faster panning and redrawing of location information commonly used across many sectors. The Esri cache map tiles and WMTS (web map tile service) service delivers efficiencies for technical users – you can save time by using this ready-made basemap and not have to create your own. The increased speed also means a better end user experience.

Further information, including URLs to access the service can be found on data.wa.gov.au https://catalogue.data.wa.gov.au/dataset/landgate-basemap.

SLIP supports the WA state government’s Open Data Policy through data.wa.gov.au. Today, members of the public access SLIP more than 10 million times per year and there are also about 11,000 users of SLIP services.

Thousands of datasets can be accessed through SLIP via a wide data services and maps. Most of the data can be viewed directly by anyone through SLIP public data services. We encourage you to explore what SLIP offers through Locate and by searching data.wa.gov.au.

We always appreciate feedback on our services and ideas about how we can continue to improve what is on offer via salesandservice@landgate.wa.gov.au.

New DataWA toolkit additions

The Open Data team have been hard at work, writing content for the new DataWA toolkit. Here is a preview of some of the brand new articles:

  • How To: Download Geospatial Data Snapshots: a guide for data professionals and developers on how to automate the download of SLIP’s data snapshots from data.wa.gov.au. The article includes working examples of different approaches for download automation and discusses the pros and cons of using APIs vs data snapshots, plus more.
  • Automating Geospatial Data Uploads: contains the first two guides for using FME and the AWS Command-line Tools. Aimed at data publishers using SLIP self-service and provides a technical step-by-step walkthrough of how publishers can set up the data upload process to SLIP, and guidance on how to automate that process. The third and final guide will go up soon, and is about using Python to upload data.
  • Download Geospatial Data using FME and Download Geospatial Data using GDAL and ogr2ogr: contains the first of two guides for data professionals using FME and GDAL to extract data from SLIP using the Esri REST API. The guides contain several working examples of extracting data through various queries – such as all of the data within a given area or all of the data matching a given attribute. The approaches demonstrated here are an updated version of the WFS-based approach used by many SLIP users in the old SLIP system, and come with a range of benefits, such as no limit on the maximum number of features, and more powerful querying capabilities.

Topographic data in data.wa.gov.au

As part of our ongoing commitment to enable you to spend less time discovering more, we are pleased to announce that topographic datasets in data.wa.gov.au have been moved to sit within Topographic Names and Address.

This move will make the data you need easier to find in one place, rather than searching through hundreds of datasets.

Machinery of Government - new agency names in data.wa.gov.au

Machinery of Government reform has seen many government functions operating in newly merged departments since July 2017. These changes are expected to flow through to data custodianship as new agency names and will be reflected in data.wa.gov.au.

The first of the new agencies making these changes are the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, bringing together the former Departments of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Regional Development.

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions has merged the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority, Rottnest Island Authority, Zoological Parks Authority and the Department of Parks and Wildlife.

If you have any queries regarding any of the above data news, get in touch at opendata@landgate.wa.gov.au.
