SLIPStream December 2018

A new SLIPStream for the New Year

We are excited to let you know that from next year we will be delivering SLIPStream content in a different way. The DataWA blog will be the new place where you can access the latest information at your fingertips.

Articles will be posted to the DataWA blog on a regular basis and will include most of the news you are used to, plus a new feature, ‘Data stories’.

This is the final SLIPStream that you will receive in this format. Keep an eye on DataWA for new posts starting in 2019. Don’t worry – we know how busy life gets, so we’ll still send you a short email when new content is added to remind you to check in.

Until then, thank you for reading SLIPStream - we hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

A facelift for Perth’s metro capture program

Landgate has replaced the Perth2 and Perth4 subscription imagery services with a new service called Perth Metro Imagery. It will retain the look and feel of the superseded services and provides Perth metropolitan aerial imagery as individual layers from 1948 through to present day.

Key points to note about the change:

  • Perth’s quarterly metro aerial capture program has ceased
  • Perth will revert to bi-annual capture – occurring in February and August each year
  • Perth2 and Perth4 subscription services will be decommissioned
  • Perth Metro Imagery contains all the imagery currently available in Perth4
  • subscription pricing tiers will be the same as the existing Perth2 service
  • your SLIP licence will be updated to reflect the new service at renewal stage
  • not all imagery captured before the year 2000 is currently available but is being added progressively over time; if you are a subscriber, the imagery will be made available at no additional cost.

Existing Perth2 and Perth4 subscribers can access the new Perth Metro Imagery service at https://catalogue.data.wa.gov.au/dataset/perth-metro.

**Update: the deadline for transition has been moved to 18 February 2019**

Please note that you will have until Monday 4 February to transition to the new service.

If you have questions or need help to move over to the new service, please contact the Business Sales and Service Team on +61 (0) 9273 7683 or salesandservice@landgate.wa.gov.au.

New features for LandInfo WA and Locate

We are pleased to announce that new versions of the LandInfo WA and Locate maps have been released. The enhancements include new widgets and upgraded functionality to enable you to use the maps more quickly and easily.

There are some great benefits to these new versions! Layer IDs for Esri Rest Services have been locked in, so when layers are added or removed from any of the services, we don’t need to amend layer IDs.

This means two important things when data changes:

  • Previously during imagery migration, the maps would be unavailable because the imagery services were offline. Now, the maps will remain active when the imagery services are unavailable.
  • If you have integrated SLIP data services into your business applications, there will be less changes to implement.

The URLs to view the maps are the same:

The first time you open the new maps, we recommend clearing your browser cache to ensure that you are seeing the latest version.

What’s new in LandInfo WA V4?

LandInfo WA V4 includes the Landgate V2 services that were recently released. The updated services include administrative boundaries, cadastre, crown reserves, property street address and tenure.

The new Perth Metro imagery service is included in LandInfo WA V4, which will replace the Perth2 and Perth4 imagery services. Please note that this service will only be available if you have a subscription to Perth2 or Perth4 imagery.

The map also includes the ability to return to where you left off in the map, if you haven’t cleared your cache. When you load the map, a box will pop up in the bottom right hand corner to restore your previous session:

Full-screen mode allows you to view more of the map in your browser. Click the Full-Screen button on the bottom-left of the map to open full-screen mode.

Layer list

  • includes a search function, so you can find layers more easily
  • layers that aren’t visible at a certain zoom scale are greyed out; you can zoom in or out to turn the layer visibility on or off.

Widgets

Add Data: allows you to add your own data services to the map via a URL:

  • Share: allows you to share a link to the map, including markups and text as well as embedding options.
  • Query: enhanced so you can do more with the results, such as export. There is also added functionality in querying so that you can search by extent or show results that intersect with another layer.

For information about the layers and services in this map, please visit the LandInfo WA showcase at data.wa.gov.au.

If you have questions, please contact the Business Sales and Service Team on +61 (0) 9273 7683 or salesandservice@landgate.wa.gov.au.

What’s new in Locate V5?

Like the enhancements for LandInfo WA V4, the new Locate service includes:

  • a search feature of the layer list that allows you to search for layers more easily:

  • layers that aren’t visible at a certain zoom scale are greyed out; you can zoom in or out to turn the layer visibility on or off
  • an ‘Add Data’ widget is enabled so you can add other data services to the map via a URL
  • a ‘Share’ widget that allows you to share a link to the map, including markups and text as well as embedding options
  • the option to return to where you left in the map, if you haven’t cleared your cache. When you load the map, a box will pop up in the bottom right hand corner to restore your previous session.

For information about the layers that make up the themed public services in this map, please visit the Locate showcase at data.wa.gov.au.

If you have questions, please contact the Business Sales and Service Team on +61 (0) 9273 7683 or salesandservice@landgate.wa.gov.au.

Landgate data migration | Important change

As a result of the recent Landgate data migration, there is an important change that you should be aware of.

SLIP subscription services| Projection of data download files

The projection of data download files in the migrated SLIP subscription services has changed.

For vector data (points, polygons and lines) SLIP uses the pre-defined, universal global coordinates system standard for delivering web data services – EPSG:3857 or WGS84 Web Mercator (Auxiliary Sphere). This is also what Google Maps uses.

For performance reasons the SLIP databases also store data in WGS84. The old SLIP Classic Postgres/ GIS database used GDA94. In the past alignment problems could occur when using data with different projections.

Fortunately, modern software can now take care of that for you, performing transformations from one projection to another on the fly (OTF), reprojecting data to the coordinate system of your choice.

For help reprojecting vector layers please contact your software vendor of choice. There are also many helpful internet articles and videos on the subject, for example http://desktop.arcgis.com/en/arcmap/10.3/guide-books/map-projections/what-are-map-projections.htm
