Using FME to download data from SLIP

The Open Data team has been busy working on a solution to for FME users who would like to download geospatial data from SLIP.

An article has been published on the new DataWA toolkit, titled How To: Download Geospatial Data using FME. At this stage, it is recommended to avoid using WFS entirely and instead use the ArcGIS REST API due to a couple of Esri bugs and technical issues (these are outlined in the article).

The article includes a workbench with some examples of reading data from SLIP through the ArcGIS REST API and using spatial and attribute filters to filter what you’re downloading, as well as a longer introduction that discusses using FME with SLIP.

If this approach goes on to prove itself stable as FME-equipped agencies use it this will also greatly simplify their use of FME versus how they were using it in SLIP Classic (where they were forced to make many requests for small bounding boxes versus just a single set of requests). This doesn’t remove the need to resolve the outstanding WFS bugs with Esri, but it does give some more breathing room.
