Summary

A Former Military Training Area is an area that may have been used by the Department of Defence, Allied or Foreign Armed Services in a manner where a hazard such as explosive ordnance may exist.

Description

Former Military Training Areas in Western Australia are managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Services.

DFES UXO Services is not an operational unit conducting searches, but a regulatory body overseeing private contractors performing the searches.

Where an area of land is believed to contain unexploded ordnance, the Department for Planning may impose a condition that the land must be properly searched prior to development. DFES UXO Services ensures that the contractors have carried out proper quality controlled procedures, during and after the search operations, before signing the clearance documentation. DFES UXO Services is the only body authorised to sign clearance documents for areas on which the Department for Planning has imposed the condition.
